Last Testament of Benito Mussolini (1945)

(The following texts are Benito Mussolini's testament and final thoughts. They were written on April 27, 1945—the day in which Mussolini was captured by Communist Partisans. On the following day he was executed without trial.)

By Benito Mussolini

No true Italian, whatever his political faith, should despair of the future. The resources of our people are immense. If we are able to find a common ground, we will regain our strength before any victor. For this common ground, I would give my life even now, willingly, so long as it is truly marked with real Italian spirit. After defeat, I will be furiously covered by spit, but later I will be cleansed with veneration. Then I will smile, because my people will be at peace with themselves.

The worker who fulfills his social duty with no other hope than a piece of bread and the health of his family repeats, on a daily basis, an act of heroism. Labourers are infinitely superior to all false prophets who pretend to represent them. These false prophets have an easy time of it due to the insensitivity of those who have the sacrosanct duty of taking care of labourers. It is for this reason that I was, and am, a socialist.

The accusation of inconsistency is without foundation. My behaviour has always been consistent in the sense of looking to the substance, not the appearance of things. I have adapted myself, socialistically, to reality. As the natural development of society proved more and more of Marx's predictions to be wrong, true socialism retreated from the possible to the probable. The only feasible socialism that can be truly implemented is Corporativism—a merging point, a place of equilibrium and justice, with respect for collective interests.

The art of politics is very difficult, amongst the most difficult, because it works on matter that cannot be grasped, that wobbles and is more uncertain. Politics works on the spirit of men, which is much more difficult to define because it is subject to change. Most changeable of all is the spirit of Italians. When I am gone, I am sure that historians and psychologists will ask themselves how a single man was able to successfully lead a people like the Italian people. If I had accomplished nothing else, this single work of art would have been sufficient to prevent me from being forgotten. Others have been able to dominate with iron fists, not with consensus and agreement as I managed. My dictatorship was much milder than many democracies that are run by plutocracies. Fascism lost more men than its adversaries, and on 25th of July there were no more than thirty persons in exile.

When it is written that we are the white guard for the bourgeoisie, it is the vilest of lies. I defended, and I state this with full conviction, workers' progress. Amongst the principal causes for the fall of Fascism I blame the deaf and merciless fight of certain financial and industrial groups who, in their mad egoism, feared and hated Fascism as the worst enemy of their inhuman interests. I must say for the purpose of justice, that Italian capital, the part which is legitimate and holds itself up with the ability of its industry, has always understood the needs of society, even when they required sacrifice to address new labour terms. The humble folk of labour have always loved me and love me still.

All dictators have always made slaughter of their enemies. I have been the only mild one: a few hundred dead against several thousand. I believe I've ennobled dictatorship. Perhaps I emasculated it, but I rid it of instruments of torture. Stalin sits on a mountain of human bones. Is this bad? I don't regret to have done all the good I've done, even to my adversaries, even enemies who plotted against my life. I've done this through the provision of subsidies that were so frequent as to become stipends, as well as by saving their lives. But if tomorrow they will kill my men, what responsibility will I have for having spared them?

Stalin is left standing and wins; I fall and lose. History only concerns itself with victors and the volume of their conquests; triumph justifies everything. The French Revolution is studied for its outcomes, while those who died with the guillotine are relegated to the obituaries.

Nobody will be able to erase twenty years of Fascism from Italy's history. I have no illusion regarding my fate. They will not give me a trial, because they know that from a defendant I would become a prosecutor. They will probably murder me and then claim that I committed suicide, overcome by remorse. He who fears death has never lived, and I have lived, perhaps even too much. Life is nothing more than an intersection between two eternities: the past and the future. As long as my star shone, I was enough for all. Now that it fades, everybody is not enough for me. I will go where destiny will want me because I always did what fate requested of me.

Fascists who will remain faithful to principles will need to be exemplary citizens. They must respect the laws that the people will give, and cooperate loyally with legitimate authorities to help them heal, as quickly as possible, the fatherland's wounds. Whomever will behave differently will demonstrate the he no longer supports the fatherland when he has to serve it from below. Fascists, in other words, will have to act out of passion, not resentment. From their behaviour will depend a speedier historical rehabilitation of Fascism. Because now it is night, but later, day will break.

Benito Mussolini

Last Thoughts of the Duce

It is not the faith that arrives at the moment of death which sustains me, it is the faith of my childhood and of my life which demands that I must believe, even if I might have reason to doubt. I don't know if the Italian people will ever read these notes of mine. I would like to believe they will, to give them the opportunity to accept my last thought as a confession of faith. I also don't know if men will provide me with sufficient time to finish writing. Twenty-two years of governing do not make me, by human judgment, worthy of living another twenty-four hours.

I believed in the victory of our arms, as I believe in God, our Lord, but even more I believe in the eternal. Now defeat provides the test-bench upon which we must show the whole world the strength and enormity of our hearts. It is now a fact that the war is lost, but it is also certain that one is not defeated until one calls oneself defeated. This Italians will need to remember, if, under foreign domination, they begin to feel the undeniable awakening of their spirits and their conscience.

Today I forgive those who don't forgive me and condemn me, thereby condemning themselves. I think of all those to whom it will be denied for years to love and suffer for the fatherland, and I would like them to feel not only witnesses of a defeat, but also bearers of a rebirth. After the time of terrible hate and revenge, there will be the time of reason. Thus, the sense of dignity and honour will be regained and I am certain that the Italians of tomorrow will be able to evaluate, serenely, the causes of the tragic hour that I am living. If this is the last day of my existence, I want to extend my forgiveness even to those who abandoned me and those who betrayed me, much as I have forgiven the king for his weakness.

Testamento spirituale di Aldo Resega

di Aldo Resega

Spiritual Testament of Aldo Resega (1943)

By Aldo Resega

[...] If I die, let my sacrifice, like that of many other Martyrs, simply represent the debt of our rebirth. Will Italy's tragedy perhaps want my blood? I offer it with the impetus of my faith. Let it flow without retaliation, without reprisals and without revenge. Only then will it be precious and fruitful for my Fatherland: a gift and not an injury, an act of love and not a source of hate, a painful necessity and not a vehicle of greater disunity.

Existence can not be reduced to the length of one's life, but only to its quality, its intensity. A few moments can be a lifetime. Si Spiritus pro nobis, quis contra nos? [If the Spirit is with us, who can be against us?]

Spiritual Testament of Niccolò Giani (1941)

Letter to His Son Romolo Vittorio, March 1941

By Niccolò Giani

Son, one day you will read these words, which my right hand — proudly firm and decisive — is writing by the light of a field lantern, while in the sky above my head the stars embroider phosphorescences full of mystery, God looks upon me, and keeping watch beside me are 675 brothers-in-arms of my battalion.

By that time some years will have passed, many, perhaps too many, years will have passed, and on the iron chronicle of this 14th year of the Fascist Era, time will have rounded off the edges and softened the surface. But it is precisely for this reason that I write: so that you can read it, remember it and never forget it.

Surrounding your cradle today is the roar of armies. 52 imperial states – and always remember their names – tried to bring your father's Fatherland to its knees, your Fatherland, this divine Italy that you too will learn to adore. They are the names of enemies, they are the names of yesterday's friends, they are glorious and attractive names: the whole world in coalition attempted this great crime. But it is a vain revolt of slaves, it is the last yearning of yesterday, it is the extreme hope of the past trying to stop the future; vain, because History — through the Engineer battalions and the genius of man — will win and you will be a citizen of the Empire. It is that Rome that our grandparents made regal, that our fathers crowned with Victory; it is that imperial Rome that you will know. And if on the fatal hills you again see the sign of Augustus, remember, always remember, that it is only because a great Victory, a profound Revolution and an invincible Leader have marked in time the stages of the triumphal rebirth.

You will not know factions, nor parties. You will not see enemies within the sacred borders of the Fatherland. You will know only one name: Italy, you will love only one thing: Italy, and for it you will be willing to leave everything, lose everything, forget everything. To be hated and vilified, humiliated and tormented: only for this Italy will you learn how to die with both body and soul. And never, never must you forget that for this sacred land, mothers greeted with a smile their own sons who were going off to die, husbands abandoned their young brides with fierce enthusiasm, fathers proudly kissed their children for the last time. That for this Italy the rivers were filled with blood, the mountains trembled, the dead came out of the earth. And that precisely because of this, I do not know you today and perhaps I may never know you: but if it were so, you would love it also for me, sacrifice also for me; die also for me. And remember that only when you see your dearest friend fall, he who is spiritually your brother, and you alone find the time to kneel and embrace him, and not a single word of anger escapes your lips, and in your mind there is no thought to curse, but you just want to march forward to seize victory and by doing so you will be sure to avenge your fallen friend, then, as soon as you are sure you have learned to know your Fatherland, you will be sure to love it.

Son, the Fatherland should always be above the family, but live and act in their ideals: you will never find a contradiction, as certain decadent and dead literature has written, but always holy and necessary integration. Only by doing this will you be worthy of this Italic people who by the thousands are today putting on the uniform and giving their lives in Africa and in Europe, fighting for the cause of justice and civilization, for the cause of the Empire of the "Pax Romana".

When you are an adult, and you gaze upon the mutilated crown atop the head of the Leader of your Fatherland, it will be easy for you to recognize the gems which the passing of time and the sloth of men have rendered hollow.

You will recognize the birthplace of your ancestors, that sacred land of Dalmatia, where every stone is burdened with betrayal and where every pine reaches towards heaven as a prayer to God for the return of its Mother. You will recognize Corsica and Malta, Ticino and Grigioni. You will rediscover the lost gems of this Africa, where now there is a great spark of nostalgia, and of that Asia which already witnessed the miracles of the great sons of Rome. You will recognize all, all the gems that must return to her, and you will see them return to her, for one by one they will return, and you will teach your child about the missing ones...

While the Roman Empire shall bring the sun back into the skies of the world, you will see nations decay, states disappear, idols and illusions destroyed: while you witness the end of a dying world, the end of certainty in believing, obeying and fighting, you will witness the rebirth of the world of justice, authority and order, because in the noon of the already born dawns the civilization of the Fasces is shining forth.

Happy fate has granted you the gift of birth in this fourteenth year of the Fascist Era, which witnesses the revenge of Adua and the triumph of the resurrected genius of Rome: may you, in life, never know the shameful flight of the enemy, as we have witnessed today: may your heart learn only the inexorable justice of Rome, for which justice four traitors now hang 50 meters from here; and may your eyes only see greatness and power, glory and victory.

Son, in the very name that you bear lies the hope of your day and your generation: Africa must be your sign and your path, your destiny and your duty, it must be your hope and your right.

Now grown up: the Black Shirt and the khaki uniform which your mother made for you in the cradle will have to be your lifelong companions. Learn how to wear them with love and pride.

Spiritual Testament of the Duke of Aosta (1931)

By Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Aosta

The night descends on my laborious day, and while the shadows flow over and submerge my earthly life and I feel the end approaching, I raise my grateful thoughts to God for giving me a life of infinite grace, especially that of serving the Fatherland and my King with honor and humility. Before closing my eyes to the earthly light, great fortune has permitted me to behold the realization of my youthful dream, the complete redemption of Italy, thanks to the valor of my soldiers who contributed to the Victory, crowned with a laurel, by their sacrifices.

Therefore I die serenely, certain of a magnificent future for our Fatherland, under the enlightened leadership of the King and the wise government of the Duce.

To my August Sovereign, whom I have always served with loyalty, ardor and faith, I address the dearest expressions of my soul, grateful for the affection he has always had for me.

To my dearest nephew Umberto, promise and hope of Italy, I give my most affectionate and fervent wishes.

To Her Majesty the Queen, to my wife Helen, to my sons Amedeo and Aimone, to my brothers Vittorio and Luigi, to all my relatives, I give my grateful thoughts for the good they wished me and which I have reciprocated with equal tenderness.

In this hour of sad passing I desire particularly to express all my gratitude to Helen for the infinite care she has always bestowed upon me and to pray my two dear sons to continue in the path which I have traced for them and which is summed up in the motto: All for the Fatherland and the King.

My last salute goes to all my friends, collaborators and dear companions of the Army of the Carso and of the Piave, to whom I again express all my gratitude insofar as my orders contributed to the glory of the Third Army and to the grandeur of the Fatherland.

I wish my grave to be, if possible, in the Cemetary of Redipuglia in the midst of the Heroes of the Third Army. I shall thus be, with Them, as a watchful sentinel on the frontiers of Italy, within sight of that Carso which beheld epic gestures and countless sacrifices, overlooking that sea which welcomes the the remains of the sailors of Italy.

Dio ci assista.

Testament of Arnaldo Mussolini (1928)

By Arnaldo Mussolini

In my few faculties of mind and spirit, as a measure of simple foresight (and not under the influence of more or less sinister prophecies), I feel the need to fix my precise will because in the event of my death I want those who survive me to know my intentions, my faith and my devotion to them.

First of all, I lift my thoughts to God, the supreme regulator of human life. I wish to die — if possible — in the great comfort of the Catholic religion, which I have always believed in since childhood and which no private or political vicissitude has ever eradicated from my tormented spirit.

Therefore I want a very simple religious funeral, without any pomp or circumstance, flowers or speeches. I ask my colleagues to be moderate with their comments in the obituary. A brief procession would be sufficient. To those close to me I express only the desire to see them when I awake in the next life. I have no preference for the place of burial. If my wife and children stay in Milan then I would like to remain near them, otherwise I would be content with the Mussolini tomb in Romagna, or better yet in Paderno on the hill just outside the cemetery... resting forever among the people of my land, dominating the valley where my hope once flourished.

Politically I reaffirm my Fascist faith and absolute certainty in the destinies of my adorable Fatherland, while deeply regretting having not given my entire life's work to Great Mother Italy. To my brother Benito I give my perpetual devotion and heartfelt wishes for his noble, fervent and selfless work. To my sister Edvige, with her instinctive solidarity among the humble, I give my affection and brotherly wishes with great tenderness.

But above all and above everyone is my heart, my little Augusta, a rare soul of goodness and unparalleled virtue. She accompanied me through my turbulent life, with unequaled dedication. A loving wife and mother, I invoke God's infinite blessings for her and the strength to overcome the sad vicissitudes of life with serenity, with the expectation of finding ourselves reunited in the infinite kingdom of the spirit after our earthly life.

To my dear children Sandrino (Italico), Vito and Rosina — the darlings of my life — I give a father's blessing as someone who worked and hoped and believed in them. I trust that the example of my activities and my selflessness will be a spur and an inspiration in the difficult circumstances of life. I am sure that they will bring undefiled honor to my name and that they will cherish their most worthy mother, showering her with every vigilant care, attention and delicacy.

I leave all my material assets, insurance premium and liquidity premium in their entirety to my wife Augusta Bondanini, who will administer them in the name and interest of our three children who, upon the death of their mother, will equally divide the movable and immovable property. I wish to donate my journalists' insurance to the Social Security Institute. Any other charity I leave to the discretion of my loved ones.

I humbly ask forgiveness if I unconsciously hurt anyone, or if I have transgressed divine and human laws. I entrust my name and my memory to my family and I entrust my soul to the mercy of God.

Supplement

Today, December 10, 1930, having re-read my testament, I do not find a need for any substantial changes. The death of my dear Sandrino gives me a desperate anguish. He must be buried near my mortal remains, since I have a firm faith that he will be near me in the kingdom of God. I have arranged that his share of the inheritance be distributed to charitable works. His holy memory will survive in those good works; his name and his holy memory will constantly be renewed.

God help us.
