A New Pope?

(Published in Corrispondenza Repubblicana, November 26, 1944)

By Benito Mussolini

The world has a new Pope! Now this Pope has nothing to do with the Roman Pontiff Pius XII, who perhaps had some illusions about these present circumstances. The Pope of which I speak is Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States. And he is more powerful than the one in Rome. Indeed, whereas the Pope of Rome is the representative of God only for Catholics, which amounts to several hundred millions of souls, the self-styled American Pope, who just proclaimed himself such on Thanksgiving Day, represents not only Catholics, but also Protestants of all shades, Eastern Orthodox and Jews, and therefore he reigns over one billion souls.

Pope Franklin Delano I delivered a messianic message to the world, in which he invited all of mankind to turn to the Heavenly Father and give thanks for the victories won by the Allies, and invoked the whole world to give the most fervent exhortations that the war will end soon to the advantage of the Anglo-Saxons. The new Pope, among among things, had this to say:
"I, Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States of America, in consonance with the joint resolution of the Congress approved December 26, 1941, do hereby proclaim Thursday the twenty-third day of November 1944 a day of national thanksgiving; and I call upon the people of the United States to observe it by bending every effort to hasten the day of final victory and by offering to God our devout gratitude for His goodness to us and to our fellow men."
This goodness of God invoked by President Roosevelt, of course, is the one granted to English and American airmen so that their bombs could pulverize the Abbey of Montecassino, numerous churches in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, entire cities filled with people, and massacre some hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians, including — just to cite a recent example — two hundred school children dashed to pieces in Milan a few weeks ago along with their teachers. Roosevelt is the real number one war criminal and openly thanks his god for the happy outcome of his crimes. Not dissimilar to the bandits of the past who had the nerve to enter a church and invoke a particular saint because they had a profitable day of committing crime. If the American President wants something to decorate the altar of his divinity, then we will oblige him by giving him the effigies of all our women and all our children massacred by the merciful goodness of his god. He will have more than enough to fill his altar! And then, after the voting ceremony is finished, he can sell these effigies in exchange for silver and gold, according to the typical American custom of making a profit.

The most grotesque thing is that other people and even other races are now celebrating this Thanksgiving Day feast. Such celebrations in fact took place not only in American cities, but also in London, Paris, Reims, Moscow, New Delhi and Allied-occupied Rome. Enemy broadcasters reminded its listeners that Thanksgiving was previously celebrated on other occasions (and for quite different reasons) by men such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. But these broadcasters neglected to mention that in those circumstances "Thanksgiving" applied only to the American people. This time they decided to include other people in this feast. The most important ceremony is the one that just took place in Rome.

Rome therefore is no longer a Catholic city, but a city of a new religion: the religion of Pope Franklin Delano I. Last Thursday this grand feast was celebrated by believers from all over the world. But of course it was not celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica (which is now moving towards irremediable decadence), but instead took place in St. Paul's American Episcopal Church in Rome.

Here Christians from all different denominations gathered together, including Catholics, and even Jews. There were military and civil authorities from the Invasion Corps. It should be noted that Colonel Poletti, Commissar of the fourth region, was also present among them. For those who are unaware, the fourth region is Rome. Indeed Rome is no longer caput mundi, but merely an occupied region with a designated number.

The ceremony was lavish. They chanted the hymns of the Quakers. They read aloud a message from Roosevelt. And then Count Sforza, Minister without Portfolio of the pseudo-Italian government, delivered a wagging speech in which, among other things, he said that the Americans (who have now become very well acquainted with Europe, perhaps through all their experience of massacring and destroying it) will become a moral aristocracy.

After this, all the participants in the solemn rite, merged together (or rather confused together) in some new Judaic-Christian religion proclaimed by Roosevelt, were assured that humanity will have a just peace after the downfall of our continent.

Everyone was excited. But we are curious what the Holy Father was thinking in that moment. Naturally he did not attend, but remained in the Vatican.
