Speech in Rome, May 18, 1940

To the Rural People

By Benito Mussolini

Fellow countryfolk!

It gives me great joy to receive you in this building, to reward your unalterable loyalty to the soil and to express to you the gratitude of the whole nation, because you represent the flower of our race. We have witnessed your strength and determination throughout the ages and generations.

I am certain that in the future, and in any event, you will always remain faithful to the soil, to that smaller soil which you dedicate your assiduous and intelligent efforts, and to that greater soil which has an inviolable name, sacred to us all: Italy!

(As soon as the Duce finished speaking, the people applauded with enthusiastic and passionate fervor, lasting several minutes.)
