Speech in Guidonia, October 31, 1937

For the Inauguration of Guidonia

By Benito Mussolini

Comrades!

Today, on the third day of the sixteenth year of the Fascist Era, Guidonia begins its life with both a religious baptism and a warrior baptism. The city is dedicated to the memory of General Guidoni, who was my collaborator in the early days of the reformation of the Air Force. His name deserves to be passed down through the centuries.

This city presents itself with the typical aspect of Fascist architecture: solid, delightful and modern, worthy of our time. Now allow me to address a lively tribute to comrade Calza-Bini, who designed and built the city, to his immediate and mediate collaborators, and to all the workers.

The other day I inaugurated Aprilia, the fourth town of the reclaimed Pontine Marshes: a rural city, a city of the land. Today I inaugurate Guidonia, the City of the Air.

There is a very close bond between the two events.

In order for field workers to peacefully make Italian soul ever more fruitful, it is necessary that vigilance and protection be in the skies of the Fatherland. Italian aviators—whose heroism has now become legendary throughout the world—have done this in the past and will continue to do this in the future.
